New parking charges should relieve congestion in Abu Dhabi immediately, says Najib Al Zarooni.
Motorists in Abu Dhabi will soon have to pay AED 3 per hour to park in premium areas and AED 2 per hour in other locations.
Parking permits for residents will be introduced at a cost of AED 800 per year for a first car and AED 1200 per year for a second car.
The Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi (DoT) has announced the tariffs as part of its Public Parking Management Strategy – a multi-phased approach to reducing congestion in the UAE capital.
“This programme is about introducing the first, short term measures in a much longer term strategy that is a critical part of government and DoT plans to ensure that Abu Dhabi becomes a greener, more accessible, less congested capital,” said Najib Al Zarooni, director of parking, Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi.
“This is just the first step, but we believe these measures will result in visible improvements by year end, with less congestion, fewer illegally parked vehicles, and a better understanding among car owners of the need to park correctly to support the free flow of traffic through our Emirate.
“It is a fairer, more transparent system that benefits residents and supports local businesses.”
Other measures to be introduced include increasing the numbers of parking spaces in problem areas; enforcement of time limits on parking and construction of multi-storey car parks.
Between 2005 and 2008, the number of registered vehicles in Abu Dhabi has increased by 16% every year.

It is a good idea, but 3 AED per hour is just insane!

Parking Fees - Abu Dhabi
The sooner this is introduced the better - hopefully then some of the commercial vehicles that clog up the Tourist Club Area will be moved on or discouraged from parking and hopefully the double/triple parking will then be clamped down on by the police and they start towing vehicles - god forbid that there is ever a major fire or incident in the area, as the emergency vehicles would never gain access at the moment with all streets totally blocked.
