The Dubai Metro's Green Line has lifted more than 11.8 million passengers since its launch last September, the Roads and Transport Authority said on Sunday.

Up until the end of January, 11,849,172 passengers travelled on the Green Line, Ramadan Abdullah, director of Rail Operation at RTA Rail Agency, said.

"The growing numbers of passengers using the Green Line reflect the substantial evolution in the culture of community members vis-a-vis the use of mass transit means, particularly the Metro."

He said passenger numbers on the Green Line hit 2.849 million last month compared to 2.785 million in December.

The most popular metro station on the Green Line in December and January was Al Fuhaidi Station where the number of users clocked 694,176, followed by Bani Yas Station with 664,351 passengers.

"The success of the Dubai Metro adds to the success of the Dubai city which is aspiring to develop best-in-class services in public in mass transit systems," he added in a statement.

Last month, the RTA said a total of 346.5 million passengers used public transport in Dubai last year.

The passenger figures compared with 332 million passengers lifted in 2010, a 4.3 percent rise, according to the figures released by the RTA's statistics section.

The average number of daily riders on Dubai's public transport system reached 963,000 compared to 922,000 in 2010, the RTA said.
